Sanya
Sanya became popular among foreign tourists these days. There are a lot of cheap hotels with single rooms. However, it has been known as a synonym of slum with lots of working-class people hanging around.
History of Sanya is not so long. There were already people in poverty living here. However, the number of people increased as the WWII started. More and more people moved into Sanya as they lost their houses in fire. After the war, those still in poverty kept living here. Most of them lived here alone, and needed to work by themselves in order to make their living. There are also some churches and non-profit organizations giving away foods and clothes.
The number of backpackers from other countries increased in the 2000s. Many of the Sanya hotels accept online reservation. If you look up some online booking sites and sort out the outcome in the order of price, a lot of hotels in Sanya come up in the first page. The backpackers recognized Sanya as an area with lots of cheap hotels, and their number increased.
The closest station to Sanya is Minami Senju on Joban line. Just west of the station, there was one of two largest execution grounds of Edo; Kozukappara Ground. Next to the ground, Ekoin temple was built to bury executed criminals. More than 200,000 criminals were executed here. In 1771, some doctors with their western medical knowledge had the first dissection in the Japanese history here by using an executed body and a dutch textbook. Inside the temple, there is a Jizou monument for burying those executed ones.
