Japanese Body Language - Things you can say with your head

Over the past few days I have shared things that the Japanese can say with their heads.

Here are a few more. Though I confess to never having heard or used them.

頭割り[あたまわり, atama-wari] sharing expenses

頭を抑える[あたまをおさえる, atama o osaeru] keep under one’s thumb; keep someone under control; restrain somonelearn.japanese.jh.jpg

頭を刈る[あたまをかる, atama o karu] have one’s hair cut

頭をはねる[あたまをはねる, atama o haneru] take money on the side; be on the take

頭をもたげる[あたまをもたげる, atama o motageru] rise into prominence

頭株[あたまかぶ, atama-kabu] leader, chief, head, executive
Have you ever heard them used?

Give one a try and see what kind of response you get from your Japanese friend.

I can remember doing this often when I was learning Japanese. I would use words and phrases just to see what kind of reaction I got.

Sometimes, however, I got responses I did NOT want.

Almost 20 years in Japan. Loved every minute of it. Well, almost every minute.
