Japanese Body Language - 腕捲くりする

腕捲くりする[うでまくりする, ude-makuri suru] roll up one’s sleeves

Good luck finding someone in Japan willing to mess with their appearance long enough to roll up their sleeves before they work.

The Japanese normally pride themselves in their appearance….to a fault perhaps. But, you can’t argue with how well many of them present themselves. But, not all of course.

The Japanese will keep their coat and ties on in blistering heat when a westerner they are working with has already long dispensed with their coat and tie. It’s 96 degrees as I write this.

So, why is that Japanese are so adamant about keeping up their appearance?

Almost 20 years in Japan. Loved every minute of it. Well, almost every minute.
