Roppongi – the area that never sleeps

A century ago, Roppongi was a backwater on the outer edges of Japan’s capital city. Today though, it is one of the throbbing hearts of a city of 12 million.

Famous the world over for its nightlife, Roppongi has long since shaken off the less than stellar image it picked up in the 70s and 80s, and is now the place to see or be seen in the eyes of many Tokyoites.

By day, the area is abuzz in business activity with many of the business world’s biggest names occupying space in the two goliaths on the Roppongi skyline – Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown. Both are relatively new additions to the area and for several years have served as the main draws, reinvigorating an already booming part of the city.

By night, things change, offices close, some return home, the neon comes on, hundreds of bars and restaurants open their doors and the night air electrifies as many of Tokyo’s non-Japanese community come out to play, oftentimes joined by their Japanese counterparts.

And, in the hours after sunset, Roppongi has something for everyone; from the family oriented places to the singles hang outs, classy jazz bars, hostess clubs and with seemingly every type of food prepared under the sun also available, there is little in terms of entertainment that Roppongi will not be able to serve up!

And it all rumbles on until the first trains in the morning!
