Tokyo – an overview
Tokyo – as much as we look at the places – do we forget the overview?
When Japanese Shogun of old, Tokugawa Ieyasu chose the area around Tokyo as his base camp around 400-years ago, the area had already been inhabited by humans for thousands of years.
1603, and Tokugawa’s arrival did see the area start to build up, however, as the nation’s top warlord moved his clan from central Japan to this area centered on Tokyo Bay and the rich fishing and pastoral options it offered.
Over time, the area then known as Edo, grew, until, by the mid-19th century it was probably the biggest city on earth. In 1868, with the abolishment of the Japanese feudal system, Edo changed its name, the emperor moved here from Kyoto, and Tokyo (Eastern Capital) was officially born.
In the fourteen decades since, the city has expanded and expanded, until, in the late 1990s, almost 13 million were discovered to be inhabiting this once sleepy fishing village.
Now the capital of Japan, and arguably north Asia, Tokyo is a city known the world over for its technological expertise, its fashions and its culinary delights.
Thousands of sightseers arrive daily – both from overseas and other parts of Japan, Japanese politics and business are centered on the city, and once upon a time, a small piece of land at the heart of Tokyo (occupied by the Imperial Palace) was said to be greater in value than all the real estate in the USA.
Whether true or not is irrelevant, for Tokyo, in all its glory is today one of the world’s most important cities in so many ways. Up there with London, New York and Paris, Tokyo is one city everyone on the planet should try and visit just once.
