Akiba Massage Chairs
After electronics and don’t want to pay through the nose? Then head to Akihabara, day or night to secure some of the best deals on Japanese and foreign made electronics, as well as the ever popular game software and anime related goods.
ALL of Japan’s major electronic retainers are to be found in the area – LAOX, Kojima Denki, Sato Musen and Yamada Denki to name but a few of the big boys. Generally 8-10 floors in height each, there is literally nothing than cannot be procured here in Tokyo’s geek heaven.
From heated toilet seats with various ‘power jet / washing’ options to top of the range PC’s, memory sticks in the shape of sushi (excellent souvenirs) and more game software than you can shake a stick at, the huge all-in-one stores have it all going on.
Nestled in between, and often behind the larger stores are the smaller, oftentimes family run places specializing in one area of electronics and with their own, loyal client base.
Add to these stores, the more recently opened outlets selling anime goods by the ton, magazines, CDs / DVDs – if it isn’t here in Akihabara, the chances are it doesn’t exist in terms of anime – and you have a right royal collection of the modern and the mind-boggling!
Of all the places in Akihabara, big or small though, those selling massage chairs have seen business on the up and up in recent years according to several industry insiders, as once high prices tumble and easier visa regulations mean more and more Asian tourists are now visiting Japan.
At first perhaps an odd concept to many westerners, and other Asians – a chair that massages – such a ‘souvenir’ may not seem that likely a take-home target for many shoppers, but there are few if any of the larger stores that ever have a massage chair sat empty; and they usually stock a good 10-15 models.
Many are claimed by those shoppers with tired backs or limbs out to rest for a while, with no intention of purchase, but serious shoppers in the market for an all in one, ‘back, leg, neck and even hand massage’ machine that comes fully automated, with remote control and soft leather exterior will pick up the nation’s best deals, only here in Akihabara! And the good part in all of this – the fact that you can actually try the chairs out before buying so even if you want to think about it overnight, you’ll leave the store feeling as good as new!
