Maid in Japan

The outfit - outfit...

The outfit - outfit...

The maid culture has been around for a while now, and many of us have heard about it, some may have even been to one or
more of the famous maid cafes out there in the streets around Akihabara, and enjoyed having a maid use a ketchup bottle to draw a red heart on a
yellow omlette (standard far for Akiba types).

More than just places for guys to chill and play what may be deemed juvenile games of rock, paper, scissors with the
cutely attired maids sent to serve, these cafes are now offering those interested in cross dressing and cosplay an
‘out’ in that being seen in, entering or exiting such cafes is no longer something that may cause the face to blush or
the blood to run; even if dressed as maids yourself.

Indeed, for many aging (male) fans of maid cafes and maid culture, a trip to one of the non-cafe maid stores that actually sell the
maid attire – in the streets off the main drag through Akihabara for the most part – is the highlight of a busy week/month/
trip to Tokyo from another part of the country or even globe.

Women and men can both purchase the latest in maid attire – in a range of colours and sizes (yes – some pieces are in male sizes) – and in doing so, kit themselves out for the
trip back home. Just whether or not they will be as openly accepted back in the bondocks or wherever they lay their head is one for them to decide – but they will always be welcome back here in Akihabara – the Mecca of things maid.
