Baseball in Tokyo in the Spring
April rolls round again, and with it the start of the domestic baseball season.
With both leagues – the Central and Pacific – now entering their second full week of competition, a few patterns are starting to emerge and things are warming up nicely.
The Giants in Tokyo are always popular but can be a tricky team to watch due to the demand for tickets while the Tokyo Yakult Swallows across town always have a few ticks available – and are arguably a more traditional team; plying their trade in the open aired Jingu Stadium compared to the dome covering the Giants’ home turf in the Suidobashi area. Another 10 teams make up the two leagues of six in Japan with the top three in each going to a play-off that then sees the play-off winners go face-to-face to lay claim to the Japan Series pennant in October each year.
But for now, it is Spring, the breezes are blowing from the south, the cherry blossoms are still lingering, and the skies are robin’s egg blue. All combine with a cool beer or two, a ticket in the bleachers and the knowledge that whatever is happening in the global economy, ball is ball – and nothing quite beats it on a warm Sunday or after work on a weekday.
