Tokyo Dome Hotel – a gem in the north of the city
Not one of the biggest ‘names’ in as far as hotels go in Japan, the Tokyo Dome Hotel is, despite its deviation from the more popular locations and lack of a worldwide name, one of the very best hotels in the city, and one worth a visit just to dine in the top class restaurants, to enjoy the view or take in the stunning night view from the cool Bar 2000 or Artist Café. Even the coloured lights and water fountains can be awe-inspiring after dark.
Or, for those arriving early, in the daytime with time to kill – or with similar unbooked timing after check-out, in the immediate vicinity of Tokyo Dome Hotel is an area full of entertainment options for families, singles and couples known as Tokyo Dome City. Shops and restaurants abound and cater for all ages although they do lean towards older, more mature customers.
Those with young children can take advantage of the hotel’s well maintained and staffed Kid’s Room or might want to check out the excellent ‘Omocha Ookoku’ Toy Kingdom to the rear of the hotel along Hakusan Dori, (a much larger version can be found around two hours away from Tokyo in Karuizawa, Nagano Prefecture) while slightly older kids and adults can be fed, watered and entertained till their heart’s content in the Tokyo Dome
City Attraction area near Tokyo Dome; home of a roller coaster, log flume type ride, many water based attractions and the popular Yomiuri Giants baseball team and also the perfect place to catch a game anytime between April and September each year (check schedules ahead of time as some tickets can be difficult to obtain). An added bonus for fans of the sport is the interesting Japan based Hall of Fame and Baseball Museum.
Just behind Tokyo Dome there is also a great option to relax in the shape of the Koishikawa Gardens.
Back in the ever increasingly iconic hotel, claimed by one Japanese photographer to have the very best toilets in the city with a magnificent view out over the metropolis, with single room rates from as little as 19,000 yen a night (discounts on Internet websites may cut that rate even more) to Royal Dome Suites that top out at a little over 300,000 yen per-night, as glamorous or budget minded as you feel, there is something here for everyone – even if it is just the elevators that whiz up in what appear to be glass chutes running the length of Tokyo Dome City Hotel.
