Jizos on parade

hrines and temples the length and breadth of Japan are often mistaken – one for the other.

Generally speaking, shrines will have the distinctive horizontal / vertical post like gates at the entrance while temples will have figures ‘guarding’ said gates.

Once inside, another easy method with which to identify the area as a temple will by by way of the rows of Jizo statues (as pictured) with red bibs or hats.

These colourful little characters actually represent the departed souls of young children and infants with the
bibs and often gifts in front small reminders of a life lost set in place by grieving loved ones.

Photos should generally be avoided and a prayer for these souls already passed is never a bad thing.get-in-line-lads
