Matsumoto Kiyoshi – Japan’s most popular pharmacy
Since it really hit the big time in the early 2000s, Matsumoto Kiyoshi has really carved out a name for itself like no other similar chain in Japan.
Literally everywhere you turn in Tokyo and the Kanto region, Matsu-kiyo as it is affectionately known is not unlike Boots in the UK – a one time flash in the pan in the streets of Ginza itself – until upstaged by Matsukiyo several years back.
Items offered center on over-the-counter medicines, medical health supplements, associated toiletries and a whole range of day-to-day necessities from hair tonics to skin creams and energy bars to energy drinks.
Identified mainly by the bright yellow store sign with large black letters, interestingly Matsukiyo Ginza – perhaps the best known of the stores all over town – has had its yellow toned down; shop execs opting for a more appropriate and fashionable, it is Ginza after all, silver grey piece facade.
Prices in Matsukiyo Ginza, and throughout the chain in general are never anything other than very reasonable. Quantity coupled with quality is the obvious deep down modus operandi at Matsukiyo, and it shows every time you walk away with one of their (yep, you guessed it) bright yellow shopping bags.
