Arakawa Yuenchi – theme parks as they used to be.

When it first opened in 1950, the Arakawa Yuenchi Amusement Park was cutting edge in terms of entertainment for the kids.
Today, times have changed but a visit to a theme park as was is an interesting experience in and of itself, and, actually
getting there could be seen as the first part in a journey back through time – as the only public transportation option
that stops anywhere near the park involves the use of Tokyo’s last remaining tram service; the Minowabashi – Waseda Toden
Line (opened 1911) more commonly referred to as the ‘Chin Chin Densha’.

Yuenchi, as locals call it, is best accessed via the appropriately named Arakawa Yuenchi-mae stop on the aforementioned
Toden Line (all tickets are 160 yen regardless of distance or number of stops traveled) – stroll down the road adjacent
to the police box by the tram stop – and offers youngsters a chance to enjoy an old style Ferris Wheel, mini-roller-coaster,
several slow rides designed with the kids in mind, and even jump up and down on a bouncy castle.

As if that were not enough, pony rides, and a small petting park offer a chance to get up close with some of nature’s more
amiable of creatures. Fishing is yet another almost forgotten form of fun for kids of any age and is permitted in a small
fishing area in this park sandwiched between the tram line and the Sumida River on its northern edge.

In the warmer months, a large pool with slides is the ideal way to cool off

Best of all though is the fact that adult admission tops out at a very reasonable 160 yen, compared to several thousand yen
at some of the larger, more crowded and heavily commercialized offerings in Tokyo and the Kansai district. Rides and amusements
must be paid for individually however, which is a great way to keep an eye on the yen leaving the wallet, but for anyone used
to prices at the big name parks, Arakawa offers nothing but smiles.

Step back in time and have fun the old fashioned way at Arakawa Yuenchi.
