Yamanobe No Michi [山之辺の道] is Japan’s Oldest Road! According to the Source of “The Tenri municipal government”, there are beautiful mountains ranging east of the Nara Basin. At the bottom of them lies an ancient road from Heijo (Nara city) through Isonokamifuru to Miwa and Kanaya. This road is the oldest road on record in Japan, called “Yamanobe no Michi.”
The road is dotted with many shrines, temples and tomb mounds connected with historic or legendary events which appear in Kojiki (a collection of legendary stories of old Japan), Nihon Shoki (the oldest official history of Japan) and Manyoshu (the earliest extant collection of Japanese poetry). Its vicinity is full of a mythical atmosphere so that visitors may feel as if they were time travelers to the distant past.

As the whole of Mount Miwa, which stands directly behind the shrine, is the object of worship, the shrine has no main hall, the place where a deity is usually enshrined. The outer shrine was reconstructed in the Edo Period by Tokugawa Ietsuna.
Omononushi-no-kami, who is enshrined at this Mount Miwa the object mountain of worship, is widely known by the divine name Okuninushi-no-mikoto (or so called Daikokusama) as the deity of cultivation, and is fully called Yamato-no-Omononushi-kushi-mika-tama-no-mikoto.　According to the classics, he is the guardian deity of the human life, and in the age of the gods, cooperating with Sukunahikona-no-mikoto, cultivated the land and developed every industry such as agriculture, industry and commerce, and contrived to augment every social welfare such as curing disease, charming, brewing, medicine manufacturing, and marriage, etc. 　Afterwaed, according to his own will, he stayed his soul (Saki-mitama and Kushimitama) at the said Mount Miwa (Mimoro-no-Kamunabi) in eternity.　Since then, the whole Mount Miwa has been worshipped as the object mountain (Shintai-zan) as it was. 　As the result, there is no main shrine even today, and the ancient form of worshipping has been handed down as it was.
